Seats...and safety

Decided to ditch the old SR5 seats for some Summit sport seats. Also made some mounts out of their universal seat brackets. And since I live in the mountains, harnesses and a harness bar seemed like a decent safety upgrade. If you're considering harnesses, I recommend Schroth. They're the only DOT approved harnesses.

I am worried about using harnesses without a roll bar or cage. In a rollover, the harnesses will keep you straight upright and that could smash your head in. A stock shoulder belt will allow you to kinda slide a little sideways if the roof comes down.

I know this from experience as I flipped my first car. The seat belts kept me and my passenger inside the car but we were able to crawl out even the the roof was flattened. Had I had harnesses, we'd be a lot worse off. Seats wouldn't have made much of a difference, but for me cage comes before harnesses.

I thought long and hard about that exact situation. Having been an EMT in Florida, the worst accidents I've seen were when people rolled their car and were ejected half way out of it, crushing and ripping them apart. I'd rather be kept in the car during a rollover than worry about the roof caving in. In that scenario, I'd be fucked anyways. There is no way I'm walking away from a rollover so devastating that the roof completely caves in.


And with a cage, you have all kinds of wonderful steel tubing to bounce your head off of during a rollover. I don't do cages without a helmet. But, to each his own...

Yep you got that right about the helmet, it's all or nothin I reckon.
