Sweet... I really hope the body lines end up differently though... Haven't really been too keen on the more modern subie ones.

THe Subies are generally too damn heavy as well. The all wheel drive hardware pushes the weight up, so hopefully it will come down somewhat. I image that they will use a modified transaxle of the type curently used in the Subies but with no front axles coming out.

bleh... and they are no fun to work on either... but it really doesn't make sense for them to change the design too much

I dont mind the new 86 but nothing can compare to the awesomness of the original 86 still would rather have the old school than this imo

Wow, I thought it was just going to be a RWD eco-box, guess I (along with many others, no doubt) have just been proven wrong. Seems like they really tried to take to essence of the AE86 and put it into this car. I also love how they keep aftermarket modding in mind (like the roll cage thing).

Yeah, I had been lukewarm about it at best but I'm interested now. Have to see how it turns out in the end though.

Still powered by a Subaru engine? If so, still not interested.

first decent salvage drivetrain i see is going to be a donor for my hatch. I wouldn't put it past toyota to keep certain measurements close to the ae86 for swap fans. Im hoping everything is light enough to retain balance.

The engine was designed by Subaru before this project was started so there is no way that it was designed to fit in an AE86. It might fit anyway, who knows. But I guarantee you that no one at Toyota is designing new car engines based on being able to swap it into a car that they quit making 24 years ago.

i was thinking more about stuff like rear axle width (even though this could be adjusted), bell housing diameter, bell housing height in relation to motor mounts and shift linkage position. the aspects that toyota would have customized for their chassis.

From what I have read it's not really a new car. It's basically an existing Subaru Legacy rehashed to be rear wheel drive with different sheet metal. I don't doubt that the sheet metal and interior will be diffrerent between the Toyota and Subaru versions, and there might be some other differences, but I don't think that they will be major. Again I don't think that Toyota would change the design so that components could be fit into an ancient Corolla. If there was a good reason to do it, yes they would change something, but I think only real businues influnenced decisions would make it.

I personally think the whole thing is a bit of an embarassment for Toyota. This pretty much says that they are admitiing that they can't do an exciting sports car anymore, or much of anything exciting for that matter.

i have not heard anything official regarding the legacy rehash, but that sounds horrible. its funny that you mention business as the only reason to change anything, and extremely true. much of my family comes from the era of american cars as the obvious option. growing up my 89' crx running longer and stronger than anything they had ever seen completely changed their perception of imports. i know that rolling around in a clean running ae86 definately can change the perspective of the person in a barely functioning 2001 chrysler. i hope that toyota can see what an impact almost classic car brands can play in shaping and converting public opinion of a new brand.
