PostSubject: To Buy or to Fix (a.k.a I need some advice on Carbs)    Tue Jan 13, 2015 12:10 am

So I recently bought an 1986 Toyota Corolla SR5, and have been restoring it. I was having some carb issues with it (ie Idling rough/cutting out until warmed up) and everyone I talked to said it was probably a vacuum line that needs replacing. So my question is should I try and find the vacuum line and replace it or should I buy a new carb and put that on? If I was to buy a new one I was looking at getting the Weber 32/36, are there any other carbs that you guys would recommend or is that my best bet? Thanks in advance

Chances are, the weber will solve almost all of your problems now and in the future. There are modifications that can be done to the stock carb to make it perform much more efficiently even on par with a weber, (I personally still prefer the weber if you can afford one.) In all honesty, I feel that if it runs fine after its warmed up then it might be a choke issue. As far as other carbs, ive seen people use Holley carbs before and then there is always bike carbs which are great. But neither of those are as simple, easy, and complete as a weber. The weber is literally a bolt on kit with very few minor modifications need to be done.

II have an AE82 with sohc 4AC. Spent years repairing vacuum leaks on the AISAN carb, both myself and sometimes paying mechanics to do it.

Just replaced the stock carb with a rebuilt Weber 32/36 DGAV and very happy with it.

Ive always thought it would be interesting to try some stromberg carbs or similar oem style sidedrafts. Thought it would be cool to have an oem sidedraft look. But it never really seemed worth the time and effort.
