PostSubject: Need some help with my Celica AT160   Thu Aug 07, 2014 8:23 am

Hello, I'm new to this forum and I need advice.

I have a 1986 Toyota Celica ST Coupe, my first car.  The problem is that I do not know what kind of engine is in there.
On the engine it says 4A, but nothing more. After some digging on the internet I found out that it probably has a 4AC engine. Is this true?

This car had been sitting for 16 years before I bought it, and all it needed was a fuel pump to get it running. To pass inspection it got a secondhand battery, secondhand tires, timing belt, fuel lines and a new light. It has some trouble starting sometimes, but it hasn't broken down.

We passed the 200k km mark about 2 weeks back.

What can I do to get this car in good shape engine-wise?

Is that yours in the picture? If so it looks great! Cool
Anyway, I can almost guarantee you do not have a 4AC. Does it have a carburetor? I dont recall any celica ever coming with the 4ac. If it is carbed you probably have a 4AF. If fuel injected its probably a 4afe or 4age. Some pictures would really help a lot however.

Other than that, seems like you're in the right direction so far. I would suggest buying a service/owners manual for your car. You can find them online, ones like Haynes are pretty decent, straightforward, and easy for starters. It will also cover basic engine maintenance, and pretty much most everything you want to know. A good place to start when servicing an engine however, or things that should be checked/done on any car when you first buy it are simple things like oil change, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, timing belt, checking for leaks and replace any seals/gaskets you think you need or may need soon, many recommend to put some Seafoam in it(most just dump a bottle in the gas tank but there are other places to put it), brakes, and maybe shocks/struts. Also checking/change your radiator coolant and other engine belts. That's most of it for general maintenance I believe, anyone feel free to add or correct.

Might be a 4AF... snap a pic and post it.  That would be the bust way to figure it out.  I'm fairly certain that these motors didn't come in celicas.

EDIT: Seems rumsawatti types faster than I do. hahaha
