PostSubject: Dry Sump Knowledge   Sat Oct 31, 2009 12:23 pm

I was having a discussion with a friend about dry sumps. We know what the benefits from a dry sump set up are, but I am wondering what other people think are the benefits. So if you have any feelings on the matter please post them up. It doesn't matter right or wrong, I just want to know people think about it.

Well, you've preaty much got it. All these added together is what helps high output engines last longer. In hard cornering and race style driving, with out one, your engine life could be cut down to almost half. High output engines don't last long to begin with. Now, we are talking about HIGH COMP and RACE TURBO engines.... not street engines. A factory consumer engine could race around all day and not have a problem.

However...... you have missed the one most important feature of a dry sump system.

In a wet sump engine you store oil in the oil pan. In a dry sump engine you store the oil in a separate tank. You have a special type of pan and an extra pump that pumps oil out of the pan and into the tank. The main advantage is that on racing engine the high G forces can cause oil pick up issues that can destroy the engine. With a properly designed tank you can withstand whatever G forces that the car is capable of making with out the engine starving for oil.

It's expensive and you don't need it on street car car, so it's not a popular mod. Pretty much only reasonably well financed racers do it. Spending several thousand (at least) on a dry sump system is good insurance for your $50,000 race motor.
