PostSubject: AE71 wagon bogs when in gear?    AE71 wagon bogs when in gear? EmptyMon Sep 22, 2014 1:42 am

So me and my girlfriend just got her 4A-C longblock rebuilt. Her and I installed everything just as directed in our Bently Service manual. The engine itself runs and sounds amazing but for some reason the car begins to bog when after driven for about 5mins, we went over the vacuum lines, made sure the torque converter was installed correctly, adjusted the neutral safety switch / linkage ( this actually made a big difference because the transmission used to engage rather rough but now does not). Should we do a line pressure test?. We would appreciate any advice or instructions we can get Smile.

p.s. its a automatic </3

Hows the tune on the carb? What kind of carb and was that rebuilt also?

The 5 minute delay in crappiness makes me think it could be either the thermal vacuum switch thing or the carb. Double check all of your vacuum connections. If you used old vacuum hoses make sure to check for cracks or your best bet would be replacement.

well it no longer takes 5 mins for it to start bogging, now its just from when it is put into gear. I am using the vacuum diagrams from all data but i would really like to use some reference pictures. The carb is stock and not rebuilt :/.
thanks you for all the help ^_^

I can't help with any pictures because I don't have very many of the vacuum lines left. is the hesitation all the way thought the power band? Do you see any smoke? when you hit the gas?

Im thinking carb still. Did you mess with the tuning any after the rebuild? Have you tried spraying any carb cleaner around to check for vacuum leaks?
If you have the funds, you should invest in a weber 32/36 or you can modify the factory carb a little to make it a little more simpler and better. But I love the weber and its so easy to install, tune, and maintain. Just a little costly, I thought it was worth it though.

I will make sure to check for the white smoke on my next trial run.

I did not tune or mess with the carb except for removal and re-install. I noticed via the search option that some of the users did a vacuum delete, will this make me fail California smog?

The no.1 jet also broke and we replaced it with a valve check. Would this make a difference?

I also have hose 17881 that connects to the shroud kind of loose, would this also make a difference?v(it is number 7 in the image)

Almost forgot to say that it does not bog if i push down the accelerator but only when its in gear without the pedal depressed.. if that makes any sense >_<

I dont think so, when I bought my car it didnt even have no.7, I think that just sends air down to the header to attempt to cool it off a little. Not in the header, on the header lol
Maybe im not too good/knowledgable with jetting and such haha
Yeah, vacuum delete wont pass smog. Have you tried pulling the air cleaner off and running it to see if it changes anything?

Part number 7 is only there to send hot air into the engine for the first few minutes of operation. Your car will function perfectly without it, but you will need it if your smog tech knows his stuff.

good luck!!

On a a side note, #7 basically taking the hot collected from the heat shield (#Cool there is a vacuum controlled flap that goes through that expensive temp tree thing and is only activated when the car is cold.

thanks ^_^.

one more question before I go ahah. Does upgrading the carb to the 32/36 also void smog emissions tests?
