drifting technique in the sr5 ae86 Empty
PostSubject: drifting technique in the sr5 ae86   drifting technique in the sr5 ae86 EmptyWed Jan 11, 2012 2:05 pm

ok, I have a bone stock sr5 with the exception of lowering springs. when trying to drift, the car understeers like crazy. I've had some seat time and I can get the car to slide a lil bit if I give it balls-out throttle, a lot of weight shift, and a strong clutch kick. I have figured out a way to overcome the understeering and I will share:

step 1: approach corner at decent speed-2nd gear 4k rpm

step 2: whip the car by flicken the opposite direction quickly to get the weight transfer (feint)

step 3: turn in, if the car behaves anything like mine, it will understeer like crazy and you will be scared you're not gonna be able to turn sharp enough to make it through the corner.

step 4(this is key) : clutch kick. dont be a pansy, give her a good kick and put the go pedal all the way down-this will change the slide completely and really initiate the true drift

from here on, juet let the car slide and let the steering wheel spin through your hands until the car is pointed in and you have good angle. then catch the wheel and hold the drift as long as possible.

I just started playin around with drifting. according to the drift bible beginers are supposed to start with the e brake but mines broke so this is what I do.

Please reply with your drift technique afro

Thanks! The only other car that I slide is my mom's 2012 Mustang Gt. So its like night and day. It takes so much more technique to break the sr5 loose.

The key to a good feint is to pause for just a moment between your approach (turning away from the corner) and your entry. This gets the weight to "recoil" (you don't need to turn too hard, just to get the car to lean the direction you will eventually huck the car) and when timed right you shouldn't need to clutch kick. Although I usually combo it with a clutch kick to insure the rear tires break loose.

Nothing will pucker your no go hole faster than a balls out entry where your rear tires stick, and you get snap understeer.

#1 tip for 4AC drifting... Come in hot, and nail your line. if you need/want to use the e-brake DON'T drag it. Many people rip the brake until they are fully in the drift. Say goodbye to all that hard earned speed. Do very quick, hard pulls, like starting an old lawnmower

Welding your diff or installing a spool is the best bang for your oversteer buck upgrade

I'll have to practice my feint more. I've tried to get the car to slide without a clutch kick and it wont for me. It also won't break the rear loose on clutch kick alone-I have to feint and clutch kick. I'll have to try out your technique, even though I can't quite grasp the concept of it, because I want to rely on my clutch less because my throwout bearing is already noisy and when I replace the clutch soon, I want it to last.

I plan on spooling the rear and uping the psi in the rear tires. I figured if I can get my drifting down on an open diff and regular psi, that when I tune it I'll appreciate it more.

I also have a few performance goodies sitten around but they aren't goin in until after coilovers/panhard bar/sway bars/and strut bars.

thanks for sharing Wink

hammer throttle feint one way, when you come back the other, hammer throttle down. Also this will most likely only work in the rain.

Another thing to note is that it will wanna down shift or upshift causing a suprise.

It can be done though. This is me in my auto sr5, watch:
