Anyone besides me want to take a crack at going out there and competing at drift events? i figure its a (cheaper) but costly way to get into motorsports rather than scca and nasa or run-off events and all that, what do you think?

It mostly depends on what saftey equipment they require. Safety equipment can run anywhere between $100 to $4000 or more depending on the sanctioning body. Autocross and rallycross are the cheapest in my experience only requiring a helmet. Other types may require helmet, fire suit, head and neck restraint, 5 point harness, racing seat, roll cage, fire extinguisher, etc.

Naw man just take it to the streets. Street drift man, roundabouts, children playground parking lots, walmart parking lot, across from the police station, back country roads, everywhere. NO SAFETY REQUIREMENTS! affraid

I'm joking of course.

The first (and only drift event thus far) i've been to was at a local stockcar speedway and the only reqs were DOT & maybe SNELL approved helmets, which I was suprised about, but totally ok with it.

drifting here (Arizona) is pretty basic. Tech guys look for these things.

No major chips or cracks in front windshield
Headlights, tail lights
stock 3pt. seat belt or higher
sturdy seats
all lug nuts are on tight
coolant reservoir with zero leaks
battery tied down( - taped over at some events)
Snell m 2005+ or S/A 2005+ helmet

that's about it.

I won't recommend street drifting as it's illegal and dangerous. but if your like me.... just do it in a safe spot... Wink

find yourself a 3rd member from a manual transmission sr5 ae86 and you'll be able to slide a little easier! automatic ae86 sr5 is 3.9 and manual is 4.1

Nice vid!!!

^ Don't waste your money on another SR5 3rd member. If you want to change gear ratios you can always just swap the pumpkin, but still it's not really worth it. It won't do nearly as much as a 5 speed swap will do.

If you swap the 3rd member, go with a GTS. Why waste your time and money looking for another crappy rear end? Unless of corse it was due to an accident or something of that nature where a replacement in neccissary.

Jinksoku - Thanks

To you both, thanks you for your input and ideas. I was planning on sticking with a 4ac engine and 5spd swap, but at this point in my life it wasn't feasible, so I have to make do with what I have. A 5spd conversion is on the ducat for the future however, and maybe a 16v. *prepares for ensuing flames*

lol... i actually meant the pumpkin(THATS WHAT 3RD MEMBER MEANS!!) not the whole rear end..
a gts rear end would be great if you can find one...

4ag's are great engines, if someone flames you for that then they're retarded...

the 5speed swap is a very good idea

As far as I know the pumpkin is referred to as a "Pumpkin" or differential. 3rd member refers to the entire rear end housing. but yeah, we agree Laughing

I <3 4AG's and I would never flame them. In fact, I have a 20v on my engine stand right now. To be quite honest I absolutely HATE the 4ac, the torque is nice, but it falls on it's face around 5,200 RPM and you gotta dump twice the money a 4ag will cost just to reach 3 digit numbers... Sad.

BUT, it is the motor in my Street car and I don't have the option to swap at this time so i'm just dealing. I'm here for referance and the Toyota nerds... Rolling Eyes

A third member is not actually the whole rear end. It refers to a removable section that mounts the gears and diff and includes those parts in an assembly.

Looks like this:

as far as competing, once you do your 5spd conversion or even as is you can start to autoX it's an awesome way to figure suspension/tire dynamics and you also get to learn about lines, cornering, braking and even the basics are valuable!!

you can use everything you've leaned from autoX and apply them in different degrees to compete in drift events!!

Definitely. I plan to autoX the ae86 come spring. There's a pretty big scene around the school I go too. I won't be the fastest, but I'll have fun, and you're right: learn something while I'm at it.
