PostSubject: 4ac + R1 Carbs.   Tue Aug 02, 2011 1:50 pm

Just picked up some R1 Carbs from a fellow member here (forgot his screen name)

Anyway, does anyone know of a write up to the r1 carb istall on a 4ac. or any motor for that matter. I know some 4ag's and 3tc's use these as well as the 4ac's. Any of these will work I just need to know what is what exactly and a rough idea of what's needed and what isn't.

In the mean time i'm gonna see if my friends dad can identify these for me. (he is a motorcycle mechaninc)

Thanks in advance.

This is from Kauaisoljah's mouth...

the bike carb setup will make a noticable change if it gets tuned for the motor its on..
the differnce i notice are that the throttle response is better & i doesn't bog in certain corners when i drive normal (my 32/36 & 38/38 used to always bog because of the float), it also sounds mean. The carbs will work better if you get a cam, dual springs w/ adjustable cam gear.
for hp, i can't give you a number because i never dyno'd my car

As well a look as to how he did his set up. He states that your manifold (exhaust) will have to me moified.

This should help you

Thank you! looks like he hasn't been active for sometime tho huh? dang, I'd really like to pick his brain since our setups are basically the same.

Meh, good to know webber main jets work. Also good to see how he modded the manifolds...

Hey wassup SidewaysEightSix. What parts do you have besides the r1 carbs? Also are you able to weld aluminum or have a friend that can? (for the custom mani) or you can just fab up a steel mani.

I'm just gonna hack my spare to a good length, and I have a spare manifold that i hacked and welded shut similar to yours.

Can I ask you for some up close pics of your carbs so i can see how you routed your lines?

Ok I upload some pic tomarrow, also make sure u use exhaust wrap because the heat from the exhaust mani will mess up your fuel & fuel line. That's why I had to mod my second exhaust mani due to it being to close together. Also for your intake manifold you have cut it at the flange and angle it up & weld it so when the carbs are mated to it, the float bowl will be level(I'll also upload a pic of that also)

yeah I know about the carb angle and that jazz. ^_^ I'm just gonna weld up a support bracket, then simply connect the carbs to the mani via 4 lengths of radiator hose.

Seriously tho, if you could take a bunch of picks and a bit of a write up as to the vacuum lines and jazz you would be my hero. i'm just kinda making things work as i go lol

i took pics of the carbs in my car and my extra set carbs(easier then taking it off and out of the car)

using this, black silicone, hose and zip straps to get my vacuum advance & vacuum for my booster with another vacuum tee(trimming the tips for the hose size)

looks like this installed

then theres the fuel inlet in this pic, also these 2 hose that im holding, i just connected these together and let the end hang to the side

Connected together

then theres this, i have a hose connected to this(mine came with 1 attached) and just let i hang to the side

this is about the angle you want your carbs at
my thumb is on the float bowl, which you want level

then theres these 2 filters, i just left them on, i seen other setup's with them off
It's connected to the slider diaphram

your running the stock R1 fuel pump correct? How did you hook up the connections?

Big big thank you!!! the vacuum advance was my single biggest question mark. And what he said ^

Also there is a smaller port just above the harness plug.. where does that go? just open? I'm hoping to have my carbs installed at least tonight.

Here is my version of your manifold lol.

Harness plug? You mean the tps? if it's that, there's a nipple right above the tps, I just put a vacuum cap over it

for the exhaust mani, one of the reason's why i chopped & welded it shut, is because when i just used the heat shield with the top welded shut. The heat from the exhaust mani started melting the fuel line/hose.

1st exhaust mani

So then, i then modified another one and chopped of all the heat shield tabs and plugged the egr so i could wrap it

front view

side view

exhaust paint

wrapped & and installed on motor

so yeah you might wanna chop off the tabs and grind the egr port and weld it shut so you can wrap yours also

Mine is still a work in progress, but I'm basically following your manifold from your build thread. lol

CytoTek. I basically just hacked the "box" off, and using some flat metal that I bent to the shape of the runners, I welded it all shut. If you want me to do one I don't mind, but i wanna get mine finished and running so I have some idea of the gains first.

DjSpecter:
Yeah im running a r1 pump, you can hook up the pump to relay. The pump has only 2 wires which needs +(acc)/-

I read about this and its not recommended cause of high flow low pressure or something like that. Its jut best if you get the fuel pump with it or it could be opposite of what I said. Vise versa

You can try mechanical 1st, if it seems like it's leaning out then by a fuel pump

well that's the plan. I have a Walbro inline, but that's for my 20v track project, and then I would need a FPR.

and holy f*** the R1 pump retails for $260 new!?!?

yea it's kinda expensive lol, but if you ever do buy one put it next to your tank, ever since i switched it there from under my hood, i notice the pump doesn't have to work so hard, and my fuel filter is always on the fuller side. But the reason i put in a r1 pump is because i was leaning out in the high rpm, but maybe it was because my mechanical pumps was too old idk. If you wanna use a faucet pump from ps&d napa, that will work also it around $50-$60, but you still gotta get the regulator to set it a 3psi. I was running that when i was waiting for the r1 pump to come in and it worked fine, the only thing i didn't like about it was it was loud when the pump was running.

Runs like ass right now. But i have no vacuum going to the distributor, nor do i have a throttle cable at the moment. Stock 1.30 jets.

Also I see your vacuum rail... but wouldn't the existing rail in the carb work? I'll try it on mine. Also the break booster should get vacuum too. can I pull that from the port on the back side?
