I want another 4AC car.........??? Empty
PostSubject: I want another 4AC car.........???   I want another 4AC car.........??? EmptyFri Jul 22, 2011 12:12 am

Well I thought I might miss my AE82, and I do a little. But what I really miss is the 4AC. The great throttle response, the sound, the simpleness, the old school-ness, I just miss it all......

My Ford ZX2 project is a little over halfway done (and I can't wait to drive it again!), but I'm already looking for another project. At first I wanted another CB7 Accord (mostly to finish where my another one left off) with the idea of a boosted F22A. Then I was looking into a CA18DET swapped AE86, or maybe even a 5.0 Foxbody mustang. I've always been caught up in wanting a really powerful car (maybe because I've never really owned or even drove a "fast car"), but I was forgetting the one thing the little 4AC taught me; power isn't everything...

So I want another 4AC car... but why? Why don't I want what alot of 4AC owners want, and even what I had wanted ever since I got my AE82... the 4AG? Or hell, even the 4AFE? Better performance, better potential for performance, better aftermarket, and genially a better performance engine. Why would I want to "subject" myself to this ~50whp-no aftermarket-hard to get power out of-eco engine?

Just thinking out loud and rambling like I always do. Was wondering if anyone else felt the same.

I miss driving mine sure. But i'll forget all about it when my 7AGE is done. Having already had a really fast car in the past, that's all I want again, except I want stronger and more reliable. I had a MazdaSpeed 6 that pushes 272hp at the crank. In two years, I killed the brakes, clutch, and two sets of tires.

I would like something you don't have to mess with or modify. BMW M3 seems like the beat fit for me. Performance, style, handling, reliability, comfort, everything all in one package. E30 would be the most baller, but way high priced. E36 are usually falling apart by now. E46 I think is where I belong. More affordable than the newer V8 M3, but can still be had in a manual sedan.

Damn, lol

Maybe the ZX2 will be fast enough for me (~200whp/wtq in a ~2200lbs car) once it's completed. If not, ether a Accord or boosted AE86 will be in my future.

Another thing for me is RWD vs. FWD. One one hand, I always wanted a RWD car to drift, but there just isn't many places around here to do that (legal or otherwise) not to mention cost of tires. On the other hand, I've driven FWD since I got my first car. Controlling a FWD comes naturally for me (I got pretty good "rallying" my AE82 on dirt and gravel roads).

Only time will tell, I guess.

Yeah that's the cost of power. Also forgot to add broke one rear axle and one front CV boot puked its guts out.

As far as RWD vs. FWD, I had driving FWD & 4WD until I bought my GS300 then AE86. It's great. THe only problem is, I'll never be able to go back to FWD haha

I think the FWD vs RWD depends a bit on the car as well. I used to have a Mazda MX6 Turbo, that was fun to drive and pretty neutral handling right up to the limit of adhesion. If I exceeded the limit of adhesion it would understeer (i.e. the front end would slide). I recently was driving a Toyota RAV4, that thing understeers if you start pushing it at all and was not fun to drive at much above sedate cruising. They burn through the front tires though with all the steering, power trsnamission, and most of the braking going through the front tires.

This thing about not being to drift FWD cars is a load of crap though. I know that you don't get any drift street cred doing it, and all the other drifter kids will laugh at you. Obviously you can't put a smoke show on like you can with a RWD (if you have enough power). You should be able to set any car up to underseer. It's easy enough to slide at least some FWD cars in the dirt, my Mazda would hang the tail end out quite controllably with out trying hard (no e-braking or scandinavian flicks required). My old mans Escort rally car slides easily in the dirt as well, although I did manage to almost spin the damn thing once.

I feel you about wanting another 4ac car but there are so many cars I want that I can't do it. I'd rather have another 86 but with a 3TC or a 4AG. I really want a AW11 or a NB Miata plus the Scion FT thing is sounding more promising.

That being said, there is a learning curve for new cars/engines and once you have one down it makes sense to stick with it.

Truth on that. I had actually been dead set on a RWD until I found out how much fun (and quick) FWD can be in the dirt. When I swapped the tires on my ZX2 once front to back (old ones in back/new in front) it would oversteer a bit if I pushed it too hard on dry payment.

I guess I simply need to figure out what EXACTLY I want to do with the car. The ZX2 should already be a great AutoX/DD car, that leaves three other options; high hp roll racing (VERY popular down here), drift, and rally. I'm very interested in all three, but drifting is kinda out as there are no events even semi-close by, and the ones that there are 4+ hours away don't happen very often (and then theres cost of tires, although I'm sure rallying would eat up suspension parts also). The roll racing would be fun to get into, could be ether FWD or RWD, but of course requires alot of power/money (if you ain't pushing 400whp+ down here, your slow....).

So that just leaves rallyX. Again, not many sanctioned events, but there are a couple whiten reasonable distance. That, and there are TONS of dirt and gravel roads in LA, many privetly owned and only needs permission (if that) to "race" on. Could use FWD/RWD, although I think I'd be more at home in a FWD on gravel. Doesn't require alot of HP (my ~60whp 4AC AE82 would scream on these roads), and of course the fun factor is through the roof. And unlike roll race, actully requires steering, lol.

Obviously I'm leaning more toward rally, but still very unsure what car I want. Could be anything from a Accord to AE86 to even another AE82. I just need to find some people to test drive there cars to see what I would like.
