| Hi I have a 1988 CS hatch and it seems that water is getting in the boot in each rear corner under the carpet. I believe that the water is getting in to the black plastic panels on each side of the car and leaking through into the boot. How can I fix this issue as it is slowly starting to rust! Has anyone else had this issue?? | |

| Yes. My AE86 hatch leaked from the tail light gaskets. It was wrecked and not repaired well. Check the seals around the boot lid and tail lights. On a real dry day, hit it WTH a water hose then pop the trunk and see where it's coming in. | |

| I had a similar issue with other cars, the culprit (usually) was the rotted crumpling gaskets for the taillights. Take them off and put a bead of black RV silicone around them where the gasket should be or where the plastic wll contact the metal to seal them up. You could also get new gaskets if they are available. A tube of silicone is around $4, gaskets are $10-$20 each. | |

| On the AE82 Hatch the tail lights dont need a gasket as there are no openings into the boot, the water has to be leaking from somewhere else | |

| Check the hatch seal. Any tears or flat areas? Metal lip that it attaches to have holes or rot?
Check the breather vents if any. Check petrol cap surround.
Basically anywhere anything would attach to the metal body is a candidate for a leak, even one bolt hole could be the culprit.
Best bet would be remove all interior plastics and carpets from the boot area, crawl in there with a lamp and have a mate close you in and run water over the area until you see leakage. Also look for a clean line or a rust line where water has been running down the inside.
Good luck, let us know what you find! | |
