What's up GUYs?!? Been a member awhile, but haven't posted since joining.

I have a 87' corolla coupe w/ a 4ac motor and I wanted to put this car project in full swing for my son, but with terrible timing and bad luck...I had to put it on hold. Got as far as the tune-up and vacuum delete, but stopped.

Now that I can start the project up again....the coupe's been sitting awhile and I'm starting from scratch. I'm no mechanic...so I'm trying to get it running. My so-called mechanic friend who worked on it and got it running has disappeared and no back-up in sight....(not a good sign...)

I purchased all the tune-up stuff (plugs/ wires/ distributor and cap/ and new battery) and installed them, drained the old fuel and replaced the fuel pump and filter, and PRAYED TO THE CAR GODS that it'll run.

Cranked it and cranked it...but no go. Sprayed starter fluid into the carb....and it would run for a minute..then die out. I checked for spark...good/ checked for fuel...(line-to-filer/ filter-to-pump/ pump-to-carburetor)...good. I checked the carb for fuel and the floater was working....seems fine.

I feel I've hit a wall with this and need some help....
again, I'm no mechanic and any help to get this project on track is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

On a side-note...my neighbor (a broke-canic) tried to help me start it and was covering the top of the carburetor with his hand while I was cranking it. It started up after he sprayed starter fluid into the carb, and while I cranked it...he covered it again with his hand and it was running!! Shocked
But it only idled while he covered the top of the carb. He says its a vaccum leak....I said I'll get a second opinion.

NEED OPTIONS.....

1.) DO THE CARB UPGRADE AND GET THE WEBBER 40.....AND PRAY TO THE CAR GODS that it'll run.

2.) BRING IN THE BIG GUNS AND GET A PRO-MECHANIC TO WORK ON IT....

3.) ????????????

H-E-L-P!!!

If and I mean IF you have a vacuum leak then the Weber would be your best choice for this. Plus it takes away all the unnecessary vac lines.

It's very typical of cars this old to have vacuum leaks. Go to your local auto parts store and pick up a bundle of vacuum hose for $30. Replace all your lines 1 by 1. If your still having issues you may just want to go with a webber.
