PostSubject: Door locks, don't lock.   Wed Feb 02, 2011 2:57 am

Hi, I've got a 85' Sr5 Corolla. It has manual locks, thing is, it is impossible to lock or unlock the car. From the inside, if I push the plastic tab to lock the door, it is still possible to open. So basically, my car is ALWAYS unlocked. It's not like I keep anything important in my car, but it would be nice to have the option.

Does anyone have an idea of what the issue is off the top of their heads? Easiest thing to do would be to just take the door panel off, but it's 19 degrees out and I don't have a garage. And has this happened to anyone in the past?

Anyways thanks very much.

I had the same issue with my old 85 sr5.
And sorry to tell you but you are going to have to take the panel off and see if the push rod came off or the bracket broke...( as mine broke and had to replace it)
Its not hard to do its just a pain in the ass to get in to the frame work of the door

Or is it coming unlocked when you lock the door from the inside and shut it when you get out and it come unlocked?
If that is what it does then Lock the door and you have to lift the handle and shut the door (door will close and stay locked).

The last ? I have is can you lock it from the outside with your key?
If not then you might have to check the lock itself.

Good luck hope any of this helps and you figure it out

Thanks for the response.

Ok, so I took your advice and tried the "lock the door from the inside then close it with the handle lifted" method and it worked and my door now locks on the driver side! I tried this same technique on the passenger side door, but recognized that when pushing the actual lock tab, there is ZERO resistance, so I'm guessing that push rod or whatever it is came off or the bracket broke off. So when it gets a little bit warmer I'll take that door panel off, and see what the issue is.

Thanks again for the help really appreciate it.
