| Trying to debug my '84 SR5. Over 1000 RPM, it runs flawlessly always. 38 mpg, low emissions, dream car. From 600-1000 RPM it either runs perfect or does not fire at all. Below 600 RPM, it is like the power is off. It doesn't run rough, it just dies. So it can only be push started. Then it runs flawless again. But it will crank on the starter for 20 minutes (if there's no hill) and never sputter, never catch. I thought it was carb (as did the previous owner), but after trying starting fluid and it making zero difference, I'm thinking maybe ignition? Is it possible the spark advance is kicking in at low RPM? Can a bad igniter do this??? So, I've got a carb rebuild kit and was planning on thet over the winter (once salt touches the road). But no longer convinced it would do any good. Any suggestions? Clueless in the Keystone | |

| I would check the spark strength and ignition timing at cranking. For spark strength use a tool like this: http://www.hotrodautosupply.com/eshop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=2You can tools like this at most parts stores for around $10. Another thing to think of is cranking speed, although I am not sure how to check this. If the engine does not crank over fast enough it won't start. I have personally not had a starter fail in this manner (they have always totaly ceased to work in my personal experience). It also could be a grounding / power supply issue. I would check all the starter connections for corosion or damageto see that you are getting full voltage at the at the starter. | |

| Your idle-port may be gummed up. A proper tear-down and rebuild would fix this. You already have the rebuild kit so you're half-way there. | |

| defiantly sounds like the carb needs a good thorough going through. be sure not to cut corners and use a fine wire in all the jets. and using air pressure to make sure all the passages are clean. my car would die at idle and run like crap and take a bit to start after I first got it. and a real good go through of the carb fixed it. Ignition problems are usually work or don't work. but I'd make sure you are getting good spark strength anyways. | |
